Chandigarh: With elections in Punjab just months away, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday announced a jumbo list of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) consisting of 36 vice presidents, 95 general secretaries and a 68-member executive committee. Besides, six spokesmen, 28 DCC presidents, 35 permanent invitees, 24 special invitees are also on aboard in this “please-all” gesture, which somehow reflects the party’s acceptance of the stiff challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the one side and the ruling Akali-BJP combine on the other. The former CLP leader and Abohar MLA Sunil Kumar Jakhar, who was little upset after being replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi in Vidhan Sabha, has now been appointed the chief spokesman of the PPCC.
Manpreet Singh Badal, who recently merged his People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) with the Congress, is now vice president of the Punjab Congress. Surjit Kaur Barnala, who had also merged her outfit SAD (Longowal) with the Congress last month has been appointed the special invitee of the PPCC. Interestingly, the noted Punjabi sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, also a Dalit, who had joined Congress after quitting the Shiromani Akali Dal and was being considered for a Rajya Sabha berth, has also been made the vice-president. PPCC team was announced by the AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmad after Congress president Sonia Gandhi approved the names. Rajya Sabha member Partap Singh Bajwa, who had always remained at the receiving end for Amarinder also being on attacking mode, till the former served the PPCC as president, has its say in the list as the high command has taken him as Permanent Invitee of PPCC, with also declaring his MLA wife Charanjit Kaur Bajwa as Special Invitee and brother Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa as General Secretary.
Further, Shamsher Singh Dullo, Ajitinder Singh Mofar, Santosh Chaudhary and Rana Gurmeer Singh Sodhi are among those leaders whose family members have also been taken along in the PPCC officer bearers’ list. A former Akali leader Harinder Singh Harry Mann, who recently resigned from Punjab State Information Commission as member and former Akali minister Chiranji Lal Garg are also the permanent invitees of the Punjab Congress. The CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi is also among the permanent invitees along with Rajinder Kaur, Ambika Soni, Ashwani Kumar, Mohinder Singh KP, Manish Tiwari, Preneet Kaur, Ravneet Bittu, Hanspal, Ch Santokh Singh and others. With Jakhar being the Chief Spokesperson, party has appointed Rana KP Singh, Nimisha Mehta, Raman Balasubramanian, Dr Navjot Dahiya and Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lalli as spokespersons. Former Khadoor Sahib MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki, who quit his seat in Vidhan Sabha in protest against sacrilege incidents, is now General Secretary of the party.
Further, Kanwaljit Singh Dhillon has been appointed as the party’s treasurer now. Party’s popular faces including Brahm Mohindra, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Kewal Dhillon, Raj Kumar Verka, Sukhbinder Sekhsarkaria, Amarjit Singh Samra, Trip Rajinder Bajwa, Surinder SIngla, Vijay INder SIngla, Surinder Pal Singh Sibia, Gurpreet Kangar, Randeep Singh Nabha, Rakesh Pandey, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Avtar Henry, Upender Sharma, Jasbir Singh, Surjit Dhiman and Romesh Dutt Sharma are all in the list of vice-presidents. The middle-rung party leadership has been accommodated among the general secretaries and the younger ones in the executive committee.
