To strengthen the NRI base keeping in view mission 2019, Congress has started making efforts. The recent visit of party Vice President Rahul Gandhi to United States is also seen as an effort to consolidate support of NRIs that had played a crucial role during 2014 elections.Punjabi NRIs even from Canada visited the events organized for Rahul Gandhi and discussed the problems faced by them back home in India. Sam Pitroda, Chairman of Overseas Congress AICC also held meeting with Gandhi and informed him that there was a need for Congress to work for welfare of NRIs so that they can make a “connect” with the party.
Pitroda also said that Punjabis living in US and Canada form the majority of NRIs and keeping their issues in view is important before going to the polls in 2019.On the other Overseas Congress has also invited Rahul Gandhi to Canada to interact with the NRIs living there. In a letter, Amarpreet Singh Aulakh, president of Indian Overseas Congress Canada has asked Gandhi to even visit Canada.
“There are many Indian who are living in Canada since generations. They are always concerned about the issues of India and are worried over developments that are taking place in the country these days” said Aulakh.He told Daily Post over telephone that NRIs are all set to support Congress. “People have seen that the BJP government in India has failed miserably. They want to see a change. If senior Congress leaders visit them and assure that their voices would be heard, the NRI community will vote Congress in 2019” said Amarpreet Singh Aulakh. On the other hand Pawan Dewan general secretary of Punjab Congress said that Congress will keep NRIs in eyes as a result series of meetings and events would be organized in coming months in US and Canada.
