Godhra case:The Gujarat High Court on Monday commuted the death sentence to 11 convicts, in connection with the 2002 Godhra train burning case, into life imprisonment. On March 1, 2011, the SIT (Special Investigation Team) had convicted 31 people under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and it had acquitted 63.
A special court in 2011 awarded death to 11 persons and punished 20 others to life imprisonment for the ghastly act, which led to state-wide communal violence, which claimed over 1,000 lives in next two months.
The S-6 coaches of Sabarmati Express were burnt over to Godhra Station on February 27, 2002, after which the riots broke out in Gujarat. There were 59 people in this bogie were killed, who were karsevaks and returning from Ayodhya.A bench of Justice A S Dave and Justice G R Udhwani completed hearing in April 2015 on various appeals filed by the convicts, the state government and the Supreme Court-appointed SIT as well as by kin of the victims.
