JK protesters to face imprisonment, fines for damage to property.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra has promulgated an ordinance making persons calling for strikes or demonstrations, which lead to damage of public property, liable for fines and imprisonment up to five years, an official spokesperson said today. According to the News Agency, Spokespersons said, “The Jammu and Kashmir Public Property (Prevention of Damage) (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 to the existing law has been made to implement the directions given by the Supreme Court in a 2009 case.
The Ordinance has been enacted for twin purposes – one, the person who damages the public-private property will get a direct punishment. Secondly, if a person or organization provokes this crime, action will also be taken against him.
