In an attempt to suppress the piracy of movies, the Maharashtra Cyber Police has initiated an PILOT project. Under the PILOT project, the Maharashtra cyber police has been able to track 900 such websites which leak movies online. The mission by Maharashtra cyber police is being performed with the help of Motion Pictures Association of America. The project would start taking action against these illegal sites and take a criminal action against them as well. In August, the Maharashtra cyber police started an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) laboratory. The IPR lab is currently being manned by 11 personnel, who would be looking for the websites leaking movies prior to their release and also providing illegal downloads.Citing the smartness of online pirates, the Managing Director of MPAA, Uday Singh informed that normal policing units wouldn’t be able to deal with online piracy and the lab would gather actionable intelligence against websites involved in piracy.Singh also mentioned that the Maharashtra IPR unit would also help other states in setting up new units. He asserted that it was great to have such unit in the home of Bollywood. Further, he added that it was also important to have such units in other states as well and also talked about such a thing in the centre.
