Man designed revered Indian tricolor. On 31st March 1921 at the Kakinada conference of the Indian National Congress, Pingali conceived the idea of Indian National Flag. With Gandhi, Pingali formed an association to fight for freedom that lasted more than 50 years.Pingali was born on August 2nd, 1876 and joined the British Indian Army at the age of 19. With them, he took part in the Anglo-Boer war in Africa and it was then when he met Gandhi.The flag designed by him was just saffron and green. The white strip was added by Gandhi while the Dharm Chakra by Lala Hansraj, the founder of Arya Samaj.According to The Hindu, “Pingali Venkayya was an authority in geology, agriculture and also an educationist who set up an educational institution in Machilipatnam. He, however, died in poverty on 4th July 1963 and was largely forgotten by the society and by his own party, the Congress.”A postage stamp was issued to commemorate him in 2009 and in 2011 it was proposed that he be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.
