Muslims cancel Muharram procession to fund cancer treatment of Hindu man. A great example of unity in diversity has been witnessed in West Bengal‘s Kharagpur. The Muslims there have decided to cancel out Muharram procession for a great cause. The Muslims decided not to utilize the money for celebrations, rather to donate the amount to cancer suffering Hindu neighbors for their treatment.Muharram procession was organized by Samaj Sangha Club in Kharagpur’s Puratan Bazar, and had raised Rs 50,000 initially. Muslim community had plans for a joyous Muharram with that amount but it took a back seat for humanity to sit in front.A mobile recharge shop owner, thirty-five-year-old Abir Bhunia is suffering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma which is a cancer of the immune system. According to sources, the amount of Rs 50,000 was donated to Abir.

Bhunia is being treated at Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre in Kolkata. He needs a massive sum of Rs 12 lakh. The treatment includes bone marrow transplantation.
“We have started raising money. On Friday, after the Namaz we will ask the Imam in the Mosque to announce a donation drive for Abir. We hope to raise a bigger amount than the budget for our procession,” Amjad Khan said.“I don’t know whether I will be cured finally. But what my neighbors did for me have touched my heart,” said Abir. A member of the Muharram committee of Puratan Bazar, Mohammad Bilal, said, god would be satisfied “if we serve the people”
