Nirmila Sitharaman new defence minister. New Delhi: Nirmala Sitharaman who has become the new defence minister of the country took over the post on Thursday. She is the country’s first woman defence minister. Although, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has also been the defense minister but she was the part time minister and retained the post of defence as Prime Minister. Sitharaman reached South Block at 10:30 am and took charge of defence ministry. At the time of the formation of the Modi government in May 2014, Arun Jaitley was given the responsibility of the defence ministry along with finance. After this, Manohar Parrikar was given the responsibility of the defense minister in the first amendment to the council of ministers in November 2014. After the appointment of Parrikar to Goa in March, defense ministry was once again handed over to Jaitley.Keeping in view the situation on border with China-Pakistan, the appointment of Nirmala Sitharaman is considered highly significant. Almost all the new ministers of the Modi government have held their positions, but Sitharaman could not retain the defense ministry’s portfolio due to Jaitley’s visit to Japan on Sunday. Jaitley returned from Japan on Wednesday evening.
