Congress aims to wrest power in Punjab in 2017 after setbacks in the 2007 and 2012 polls, when the party was defeated by the SAD-BJP coalition.
Chandigarh: Aware of the fact that groupism among the party workers and leaders can cost the Congress party dearly in the upcoming Assembly polls, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday told them to get united to win the battle of ballots in 2017. Congress vice president, who met the party workers and leaders here, asked them to ‘put up a united face’ to take on the ruling SAD-BJP alliance and emerging Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Gandhi held a meeting with the grassroots party workers and leaders to elicit their views about the situation prevailing on the ground and how to take on the SAD-BJP combine and AAP under the programme called ‘Punjab Di Gal Rahul Naal’
He also said that once the party workers made up their mind, no one can stop the Congress from forming the government in Punjab, where it has been out of power for close to a decade. Gandhi clarified: “Tickets in Punjab elections will be given to only those candidates who have worked on the ground, while retaining a balance in representation to youth, women, experienced leaders, minorities and other marginalised groups.” Over 2,200 party workers, leaders and office bearers, from district to village level, members of Punjab Pradesh Congress posed questions to Gandhi who walked, up and down a ramp while interacting with them, responding to and acknowledging their suggestions. Gandhi was in Punjab to meet party workers and leaders and discuss issues related to the Assembly polls slated next year.
Drug problem a serious issue
Zirakpur: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the drug problem is a very serious issue in Punjab. “It has always been a serious one,” he said, adding that ‘nobody can insult Punjab. Punjab is the heart of the country. Punjab gives life to the country. There is a place for Punjab in my heart. I want to help Punjab.” He said if the Congress forms the government in Punjab after the 2017 Assembly polls, the state will witness rapid development. “The Congress wants to give a new kind of government which would be sensitive to the needs of the people,” he said.
