Despite all this, the middle-class mercenaries believes that sewer cleaners are useless.Every year approximately 22,000 people lose their lives in these gutters. You’ll close the nose as soon as the sewer or gutter is named, but thousands of people die every year while unblocking the blocked sewers.Sewer cleaning workers have various types of incurable diseases, which eventually lead them to death. According to a report published in a newspaper, 22327 people died during working in sewers every year.Only in Mumbai every month more than 20 sewer cleansers die.They just apply mustard oil on their body before entering into the sewer, these cleaning workers are made to clean the gutter without any technology or equipment. Eventually, these people become victims of various types of diseases.The Supreme Court’s order is that only machines should be used for the sewer cleaning. In 2000, the National Human Rights Commission had also directed the Delhi Jal Board to provide sewer protection to the sewer-cleaning personnel, but these facilities were not provided to cleaners anywhere in the country.There are 27 lakh cleaning workers across the country, of which 770,000 government employees and 2 million cleaners work on the contract. Average sweeper earning is 3 to 5 thousand rupees per month. Two million people are involved in cleaning sewers and gutters. 90% gutter-sewer cleaners die before the age of 60. 60 percent cleaning workers are suffering from cholera, asthma, malaria and cancer.
