Kolkata: An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck central Myanmar today,
The epicenter was reportedly located more than the 500 kilometers from the Indian border.
Tremors were felt in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam. Metro services were briefly stopped in Kolkata after tremors were felt in the West Bengal capital. Many offices too were closed.
Offices and colleges in Kolkata were evacuated, people there talked of “horrible shaking” and said the tremors lasted at least 10 seconds.
The quake struck 143 km west of the city of Meiktila at a depth of 84 km, the agency said.
There were no immediate reports of loss to life or property.
The quake shook buildings in Myanmar’s biggest city of Yangon and in other towns and cities, witnesses said.
Office buildings in the Thai capital of Bangkok, to the east of Myanmar, shook for a few seconds, residents there said. The quake was also felt in Bangladesh, to the west of Myanmar, residents said.
