In protest against non-allotment of even a single ticket by Congress party to Valmiki Community/ Mazhabi Sikh Community for Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, a deputation of leaders of Valmiki Community/Mazhabi Sikh Community met senior leaders of Congress in New Delhi on Thursday evening.
The deputation briefed the leaders about great resentment, being prevailed among members of Valmiki Community/Majhabi Sikh Community, for not allotting even a single reserved seat, out of four, to their communities. The members of the deputation included PPCC member Poonam Kangra from Sangrur, national coordinator of Mahila Congress Kittu Grewal from Jalandhar, president of Congress Sewa Dal Mahila Wing Punjab Mukesh Dhaliwal from Patiala, president of Dalit Welfare Organisation Punjab Darshan Singh Kangra from Sangrur, Dr Hansa Singh from Mansa, and Shalu Bhatti from Pathankot.
Poonam Kangra, who was an aspirant for Congress ticket from Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha Constituency (reserved), said here on Friday that the deputation met Ahmed Patel, KC Venu Gopal, Mukal Wasnik (all three AICC general secretaries); in charge of Punjab Congress Affairs Asha Kumari, and PPCC president Sunil Jakhar. She said they expressed their resentment for not giving ticket to any member of Valmiki Community and Mazhabi Sikh Community. Kangra further said that all these senior leaders of the party assured them, with regard to providing them their due rights. She also said that great resentment among members of Valmiki Community/Mazhabi Sikh Community against the party would remain continued till they did not get their due rights.
It is pertinent to mention here that on April 10 in protest against ignoring her claim for a party ticket by the Congress for three times, twice for Dirba assembly (reserved) seat in 2012 and 2017, and for Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha (reserved) seat in 2019, Poonam Kangra had announced to not contest any election in future. On April 6, she had expressed great resentment against non-allotment of party ticket for Lok Sabha elections to any leader of Valmiki Community/Mazhabi Sikh Community by the Congress high command in Punjab.
