Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has directed to dissolve all 13,040 gram panchayats. All the District Development and Panchayat Officers have been asked to appoint Administrators and report to the department in two days. The step has been taken ahead of Panchayat election, which has been scheduled for September 30. The terms of Gram Panchayats will be expired on August 9. For the election schedule, further notification will be issued by the Punjab State Election Commission, soon.Last week the Punjab Government had issued notification for Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis (PS) and Zila Parishads (ZP).Election for ZP and PS will be conducted on September 10 and for gram panchayats on September 30. At present there are 13,040 148 block Samities and 22 Zila Parishad in the state.The term of Gram Panchayats will be due in August 9, while Zila Parishad and Block Samitis term will be ended on July 9. Panchayat and rural development Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa told that the elections will be conducted under 50 percent reservation to women after increasing reservation from 33 per cent as it was the promise of the Congress in its manifesto and women reservation will be included with SC/BC and general women reservation.Special Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat department, while issuing urgent letters to all the DDPOs, has said that the dissolution was done under the section 29-A of the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act and the record of gram panchayats is to be entrusted to the officers Panchayat Officers, Junior Engineers and Village development officers.
