Ludhiana: Due to losing control, four youths drowned while immersing idol of Lord Ganesha in the Sutlej river water near here on Sunday.
On seeing them drowning, divers were called and the youths were fished out. The youths were rushed to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where the doctors declared them brought dead.
Three deceased have been identified as Sunil Kumar, Vinay Kumar and Kucha Ram, all the residents of Islam Ganj area.
The fourth deceased is still to be identified.
All the deceased were in their early twenties.
The Ladhowal police have filed proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC in this regard. The bodies have been sent to Civil Hospital for the postmortem.
Inspector Varinder Pal Singh, SHO at Police Station Ladhowal said group of around 200 people had come to Sutlej River to immerse the idol of Ganesha in the water. The victims carrying the idol went deep into the water to immerse it. Meanwhile, they lost their balance and got drowned in water. The people accompanying them jumped into water to rescue those drowned, but to no avail. They called the police, divers and initiated a rescue operation. The divers fished out all four youths out of water.
Chander Mohan, resident of Islam Ganj said the area residents celebrated the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi every year and today they had gone to immerse idol in Sutlej river following rituals. On Sunday, group of 200 people went to Sutlej for immersing idol where four youths got drowned and when were rushed to hospital were declared brought dead.
