Amritsar: Physical test of the youths hailing from three border districts of majha, namely Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn taran were conducted in the Army headquarter situated at Attari road here. More than 55,400 youths of the three districts had tendered their applications to get themselves recruited in army, which shows beyond doubt that even today, there is great enthusiasm among the younger generation to serve the country by joining army.
It was, however, for the first time that on-line applications had been sought from the aspirants. Brigadier Jaidev Sumiyal, who supervised the recruitment procedure, stated that in addition to a long distance race, exercises like- high jump, long jump, hurdle jump etc were conducted and those who were able to qualify in these tests would be called for next round.
The youths were also subjected to physical measurements, including chest measurements, as prescribed in the army. Sumiyal also disclosed that in addition to youths of above three districts, a few from Jammu and Srinagar too made to the venue. On being asked that why application forms were sought only on-line as it was not used to be earlier, Sumiyal added that in order to check the malpractices committed during recruitment procedure and ensure transparency in the system, this practice has been introduced for the first time.
