Samana: The heavy polling in Samana political segment is giving jitters to political observers.
With 84.51 per cent votes polled on February 4, the old tradition is bound to go for a toss this time. On comparing male and female voters, it is the latter which has outdone the former with big margin.
Samana assembly had a total number of 1,77,413 voters out of which 1,48,954 voted for their respective candidate. The constituency has a total of 92,743 men voters and 84,657 women voters out of which 78,384 men and 70,566 women casted their votes.
Out of 13 Eunuch voters only four came forward to cast their vote. Political Observer feel that reason for record polling can be attributed to Election Commission’s experiment to introduce and provide each voter his, her voter list at the doorstep.
Of 1,77,413 voters 1,09,529 voters casted their votes by using voter slip, whereas 85,718 voters used their voter cards for the same purpose and 4,507 voters used Aadhar Card and other identity proofs to vote.
Samana city has 42,815 registered voters of which 33,998 citizens polled votes and broke all the past records. Political pundits state that in rural areas Congress , SAD-BJP and AAP are involved in a close contest but in Samana city it will be two way contest between Congress and SAD-BJP. They further added that Samana city is thus holding the key to decide the winner of this assembly segment.
Interestingly senior leader of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Punjab Minister for Water Supplies and Sanitation, Surjit Singh Rakhra is contesting the election from Samana for fourth time in a row. In 2012 assembly elections, Rakhra defeated Congress candidate, Raninder Singh in a straight fight and won the seat with a margin of 6,930 votes.
