Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday appointed political satirist and actor Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi as the party’s Punjab convener in place of Sucha Singh Chhotepur, who was removed from the post after a video clip surfaced showing him allegedly taking bribe in exchange for poll tickets. The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the party cleared Ghuggi’s name for the post, a party release said here, adding that he will take charge soon.
Ghuggi’s appointment has come as a big surprise for many in the AAP, which is passing through a tough time since the removal of Chhotepur from the coveted post. AAP on September 3 sent a notice to Chhotepur, seeking his reply after which the next course of action would be decided. The party’s six parliamentary zonal coordinators in Punjab have recently passed a resolution in support of Chhotepur. AAP had recently constituted a two-member probe panel, headed by Delhi’s Rajouri Garden MLA and Punjab co-ordinator Jarnail Singh and head of the Grievance Cell Jasbir Singh Bir to look into the allegations against Chhotepur.
Ghuggi, 45, had joined AAP in February this year. After comedian-turned-parliamentarian Bhagwant Mann, who is the party’s campaign committee chairman for the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, Ghuggi will be the second satirist to bag a top post in the AAP. Sources said Ghuggi was chosen as he was ‘a young and popular face’ in Punjab.
