Jalandhar: Aam Admi Party (AAP) state convener Sucha Singh Chottepur on Saturday said that the party would contest the assembly elections 2017 with the official announcement of its Chief Ministerial candidate before the polls. Chottepur also said that the CM candidate would be a Punjabi face from amongst the party rank and file, who would be launched well before the elections. The AAP state convener stated this during the joining of four volunteers into AAP. The AAP state convener cleared the air over speculations that the party might field an outsider as a CM candidate in the elections. “AAP would field a Punjabi face as its CM candidate in the elections”, he said.
To a query that Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh has been blaming AAP and its national convener Arvind Kejriwal as an ‘outsider’ in Punjab politics, Chottepur raked the issue of ‘Italian citizen’ of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He said, “Capt Amarinder should first explain that was he not working under an ‘Italian’ origin leader, who was an outsider in real sense. Amarinder should tell that who was an outsider, Sonia Gandhi or Kejriwal? As far as Kejriwal was concerned, he was born and brought up in India, served in India and was now a successful CM.”
Further, talking about the popularity and projection of AAP leader Bhagwant Mann within the party, Chottepur said that it was AAP which has become ‘popular’ and not the leaders. “Even if Bhagwant Mann was known publicly, it was because of AAP’s rise in the politics”, he said. Earlier talking about the SYL canal row, Chottepur said that Punjab has got no water to spare for Haryana. However, when asked that Kejriwal backtracked from his stand of supporting SYL one he went to Delhi, Chottepur claimed that it was a technical error committed by the officials in the affidavit submitted in the Surpreme Court. “AAP has filed a fresh affidavit on this issue in the Supreme Court now”, he claimed.
Meanwhile, four persons from different political parties joined AAP on Friday. These included AAP volunteer Dr SS Sidhu, Anaesthetist from Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Jalandhar, SAD Nawanshahr former president and Working Committee member Resham Singh, former CMO Gurdaspur Dr Manjit Singh Randhawa and congress leader from Phagwara Kusum Sharma.
On the issue of demolition of Gurdwara Sis Ganj Piao, Chottepur categorically blamed the BJP controlled Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) and said that it they should have taken care of the heritage site. He cornered Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal of deliberately blaming AAP in this episode and said that it was wrong to equate it with the 1984 anti Sikh pogrom. “Before blaming AAP, Sukhbir should remember what happened in Bargari last summer, when two youth were killed in police firing”, he said with a subtle hint.
