Chandigarh: Not depending upon print and electronic media this time, the Congress MLAs telecast their indefinite sleep-in protest inside the Vidhan Sabha live on social networking sites, especially Facebook.
Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp, the three prominent channels of social media, were flooded with the photographs of Congress MLAs since Monday evening as they resorted to these means immediately after the House was adjourned by the Speaker, following the defeat of ‘No Confidence Motion’ against the state government through voting.
Though many of the Congress MLAs, irrespective of the age, were active on the social media in posting updates, the Indian Youth Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who represents Gidderbaha in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, was found to be the most curious for the same.
Till Monday night, Facebook and Whatsapp were flooded with the photographs of the agitating Congress MLAs holding a Mock Assembly, sharing points sitting in the well of the House and then also sleeping on the floor. As dawn broke, the MLAs were again active. Now they posted their photographs in night dresses, brushing their teeth and having breakfast inside the House.
Meanwhile, numerous videos, almost each of it recorded and uploaded by Warring through his smartphone, were there to share their things with the masses. At the end of each of his video, the IYC chief was found laying stress on his appeal that such videos should be circulated the maximum with also urging his followers to ensure that these reach with the Punjabis settled abroad to expose the treatment they were getting under the rule of Badal government.
PA deflates Warring’s claims
In every video, Warring ensured mentioning that they were in a pathetic condition inside the Vidhan Sabha as the authorities concerned were not allowing anything to go inside, not even the medicine. While putting stress on his words, in one of his videos while showing Batala MLA Ashwani Sekhri boarding an ambulance for him feeling restless due to dip in his blood sugar level, Warring claimed that it all happened as the Vidhan Sabha staff didn’t allow anything including medicine to reach them. However, Warring’s personal assistant Roxy Brar on his Facebook page, at about 10:30 am, openly posted a photograph showing the Congress MLAs having heavy breakfast inside the House, with all carrying ‘Pranthas’ and bananas in their hands.
Female MLAs leave Vidhan Sabha
Four female Congress MLAs, after spending whole night in agitating against the Speaker inside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, were on Tuesday morning asked to go home. It was reportedly done on the asking of Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh.
The four MLAs were identified as Karan Kaur Brar, Charanjeet Kaur Bajwa, Harchand Kaur and Aruna Chaudhary. They all left the Assembly in the afternoon. Their exit reduced the number of agitating MLAs to 23, who were continuing with the plan of remaining inside till the House resumes on Wednesday afternoon.
Agitation inside as well as outside
While the majority of the Congress MLAs were staging protest inside the Vidhan Sabha since Monday evening, their party fellows who had left the House late at night for their personal issues, resorted to demonstrate outside the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday as they were denied entry to the Assembly for the Speaker having passed not to allow anyone stepping in due to the “ongoing maintenance work”. Meanwhile, some of the Congress MLA supporters were seen requesting the security staff to allow them handover the belongings of their masters staging protests inside.
