Under the banner of the All India Anganwadi Employees’ Union Bathinda block, workers today staged a protest by holding black flags in their hands against the state government outside the district administrative complex in the city. Later, they took out a protest march till the bus stand chowk. The protest was led by Amritpal Kaur. The anganwadi workers started to protest because, Pre-primary classes including nursery, LKG and UKG were started for the first time at Government Primary Schools on the eve of Children’s day. As per the directions of the Education Department, a welcome programme was organised at some government schools.But this announcement made the Anganwadi workers upset. As children from the age of III to VI would now go to pre-primary classes, the Anganwadi workers fear of losing jobs and closure of Anganwadis. They staged the protest against the government and still the protest is going on in Gurdaspur, Ludhiana and Patiala. Also, a clash took place between Anganwadi workers and police.The agitation of the Anganwadi centers has increased sharply in protest against the introduction of pre-primary classes in government schools by the Punjab government. Even though CM Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal and Education Minister started pre-primary classes in government schools, even though there has been a statement that there is no threat to the job of Anganwadi workers, but despite this, the workers of Anganwadi centers is not satisfied with this.
