Seeking apology from UK government for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which killed over 1000 innocent people, the Pakistan based Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Friday said that it was highly condemnable that even after 100 years of the tragedy, the UK PM Theresa May failed to apologise.
Pakistan based advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi along with Lahore High Court and Pakistan Supreme Court lawyers raised slogans against the British government. A candle light march was held and tributes were paid to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh at Democratic Lawn, Lahore High Court Bar Association.
Abdul Rashid Qureshi, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan presided over the function. The gathering raised slogans like ‘Bartani Hukumat maafi mange’ and ‘Bartani sarkar murdabaad’, and said that the Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a blot on the British government. “It was shocking that UK Prime Minister in her address to the British Parliament stopped short of a full apology for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. She just expressed regret over the massacre. Even the ex- UK PM David Cameroon too had just termed it as ‘deeply shameful’ but never apologized for this historical tragedy”, he said.
Talking to Daily Post over the phone from Lahore, Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi said, “I lost my grandfather Haji Abdul Rehman Qureshi, the then President of Congress party Abohar District Fazilka before partition. The other victims from my family were Abdul Khalid Qureshi and Abdul Sattar Qureshi. Even the spokesman of our foundation Muhammad Iqbal Mughal also lost the brothers of his Grandfather, Mahraj Din & Saraj Din.”
Qureshi said that both Hindus and Muslims were killed when troops of the British Indian Dyer Army under the command of Colonel Reginald fired rifles into innocent crowds, who had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar on April 13, 1919. The innocent people had gathered to protest the arrest of two national leaders Satya Pal and Saifuddun Kitchlew killing over 1000s in the tragedy.
Earlier, Raja Zulqarnain Advocate Supreme court Ex Secretary Supreme court Bar Association, Sayed Manzoor Ali Gilani Advocate, Syed Almas Haider Kazmi, Mian Muhammad Bashir, Jalill Ahmed Khan Oathi, Allah Bakhsh Gondal and Chaudhary M. Ashraf Cheema from Supreme Court of Pakistan also addressed the gathering among others.
