Shimla: All India Congress Committee secretary and former Himachal minister Asha Kumari, who was appointed party in charge for Punjab on Sunday, has been facing rough weather in Himachal politics. The five-time MLA from Dalhousie assembly segment (earlier named Banikhet) in Chamba district, Asha Kumari (60) was convicted in a land grab case by a Chamba court and sentenced to one-year imprisonment earlier this year. She is presently out on bail and her appeal against the order is pending in the high court.
The case against Asha Kumari and others, including her late husband Brijendra Singh, was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by a resident of Chamba, Kuldeep Singh, who had alleged that Asha and others had forged the revenue records, fabricated wills and tampered with revenue entries to grab a portion the forest land, especially Brijender Singh, in 1998.In all, there were 12 persons named in the case but after demise of her husband and five others, only seven persons were facing the trial.
In Himachal, Asha had to resign as Education Minister in 2005 in the then Virbhadra government when charges were framed against her in the case. A staunch loyalist of Virbhadra in the past, she was once known as his crisis manager. However, she had parted ways with him after she quit the ministry in 2005. At present, she is perceived to be in the rival camp headed by Health minister, Kaul Singh Thakur in Himachal. Partly for the criminal case against her and partly for turning rival to Virbhadra, she could not make it to the cabinet berth in the present government, which took over in 2012 December.
‘Cong banking on tainted leaders’
Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ridiculed Congress on Sunday for appointing AICC secretary Asha Kumari as in-charge of its Punjab party affairs. In-charge of Punjab affairs, Sanjay Singh said that, “It appears as if congress has completely gone bankrupt of choices of finding one clean person with unblemished record to lead the party in Punjab,” he said.DP
‘Another example of Cong callousness’
Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday said that it appeared that the Congress did not have any persons other than genocide accused and land grabbers for appointment as incharge of its Punjab unit with newly appointed leader Asha Kumari having been sentenced to a one year jail term in a land grab case early this year. In a statement here, SAD leader and Union Minister for Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal said it appeared the party of scams and scamsters was running short of clean persons to head the Punjab unit. “How else can you explain the recent appointment of Kamal Nath as the incharge of the Punjab unit before he was made to resign after Punjabis expressed their outrage.” She said as if this was not enough the Congress high command had now pulled Asha Kumari out of the box and appointed her as the state incharge.DP
