Amritsar: With the assembly elections which, concluded on February 4, the crime scene in the district changed noticeably. The deployment of central para-military forces in and around the holy city, a month before the polling resulted in restricting of criminal activity.
According to police that smugglers and narcotics pedlars remained under pressure of the law enforcing agencies bringing down the crime activities.
The incidents of seizures of narcotics fell to all time low but there was hardly any fall in the incidents of snatching, stealing, assaulting and killings. The coming of elections also led to the preventive arrest of bad characters which resulted in coming down of incidents of crime.
During the last week of January, a team of special task force (STF) of district police recovered two pistols from dreaded gangster, Ranveer Singh alias Rana Kandowalia. The gangster admitted his involvement in a number of criminal activities and revealed his links with international gangsters. The STF succeeded in seizure of two foreign made pistols. Police was reported to be on the lookout for Mohit Shingari, another dreaded gangster of the region, as Kandowalia had conceded to Shigari’s involvement in many crimanal activites, including one murder case, committed jointly by the two.
It was reliably learnt that following the interrogation of kandowalia by STF, Shingari went underground.
On February 1, just a couple of days prior to the day of polling, a luxury car was stolen from outside the office of Congress nominee for the Lok Sabha, Gurjeet Singh Aujla. His office is situated near Gumtala by-pass. A police post was also nearby.
Three incidents of snatching purses and moblie phones were reported in a single day in holy city just a day before the elections.
