Chandigarh: All politicians want their progeny to succeed them and wield power, be it the Akali Dal or the Congress. One of the reasons for the success of dynastic politics is that in Punjab the student politics in colleges and University had been halted during the days of turbulence which had not been restarted. This led to loss of youth leadership which earlier used to be nurtured in educational institutions. Now as there are no student leaders, there is paucity of independent politicians in the state. This vacuum is now being filled up by the children of the politicians.
In Shiromani Akali Dal the Badal family is the main stake holder. In the Congress, at the national level it is the Gandhi family. The Punjab youth Congress is led by Amarpreet Singh Lali who is the nephew of Ambika Soni a Congress leader. Its general secretary is Kanwar Partap Singh Bajwa who is the nephew of Partap Singh Bajwa who is a member of parliament, Rahul Sidhu, youth Congress president of Sangrur is the son of former Chief Minister Rajinder Bhattal.
MP Chaudhry Santokh Singh’s son Vikramjit Singh Chaudhry had been president of the Punjab wing of the youth Congress. In SAD Sukhbir Badal Deputy Chief Minister is the son of Parkash Singh Badal. Bikram Majithia, who is the revenue minister in the Badal government is brother-in-law of Sukhbir Badal. MP Harsimrat Kaur is the wife Sukhbir Badal.
The list does not end here. Ravikaran Singh Kahlon, Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, Harinder Singh Chandumajra and Ravinder Pal Singh Gabhrian strengthen the argument of “Bhai-Bhatijawad.” The question arises, when the state has returned to peace why not the student politics is allowed to play its genuine role in Politics?
