Kapurthala: One of the key constituencies in Doaba region is Kapurthala. This assembly seat has always witnessed tough contest between traditional rivals Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) and Congress. Till now only SAD has announced Paramjit Singh Pamma as its candidate while other parties including Congress AAP , BSP and other outfits are taking time to announce their candidates for this segment.
During 2012 assembly elections sitting MLA from Congress Rana Gurjit Singh registered his second individual and family’s fourth consecutive victory with a record margin of 14,482 votes breaking all previous records against SAD candidate Sarabjit Singh Makkar, while other five contestants lost their deposit.
As compared to 1,14,328 votes during last assembly elections 2012 now total votes have gone up to 1,44,810 which constitute 34 per cent dalit votes. SAD this time has played a dalit card by giving this non-reserve seat to a reserve category candidate.
Three consecutive victories in assembly elections and one by-election puts Congress at forefront. Expected Congress candidate from Kapurthala segment in forthcoming assembly elections Rana Gurjit Singh took charge of this seat during 2002 elections.
In 2002 Rana Gurjit defeated SAD MLA and then transport minister Raghbir Singh with a record margin of 13,125. Duriing 2004 Rana Gurjit Singh was allotted parliamentary seat from Jalandhar constituency which he won. A Kapurthala assembly segment during 2004 by elections was held and Rana Gurjit’s sister- in-law Sukhjinder Kaur Sukhi registered victory over SAD candidate Raghbir Singh with a margin of 13,255 votes.
During Vidhan Sabha assembly elections in 2007, Congress allotted the ticket to Rana Gurjit’s wife Rajbans Kaur who also won this segment.
Before 2002 assembly elections, contest used to be between SAD and Congress. Since 1969 SAD and Congress have contested
five elections against each other.
Three times SAD candidates including Bawa Harnam Singh won this election in 1969 and SAD candidate Raghbir Singh won elections in 1985 and 1997. While Congress candidate Kurpal Singh won this elections in 1972 and 1980 and Gulzar Singh won elections in 1992 against BJP candidate Hira Lal Dhair. In 1977 Janta Party candidate Hukam Chand was became victorious from this segment against Kirpal Singh of Congress.
