Forensic officials also under scanner
THE SIT HAS RECORDED LARGE NUMBER OF CALLS TO THE THEN DGP ON THE DAY OF FIRING
Former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini is likely to feel the heat of the SIT set up to investigate the Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura firing incidents. There are strong indications of him being subjected to interrogation shortly after the SIT has taken on record a large number of calls that were made to him on the day of firing. Two persons were killed on October 14, 2015, in an alleged point-blank shooting by the police team led by IGP Paramjit Singh Umaranangal, who was Ludhiana police commissioner and the then Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma. Both the police officers have been arrested. The SIT has recorded that both the officers went beyond their territorial jurisdiction to lead the police team in Faridkot district and on the day of firing made a large number of calls to the then DGP Saini.
The SIT has found that a night preceding the day of firing Umranagal had requisitioned special police force from Ludhiana to reach Behwal Kalan. While seeking the police remand of Umranagal on Tuesday the SIT said that it needed custodial interrogation of Umranangal to ascertain at whose orders or directions did he go to Behbal Kalan leaving his place of posting. The role of some of forensic science laboratory officials has been also under the SIT scanner for trying to twist evidence in favour of the accused police officers. Both Umranagal and Charanjit, have alleged that the police firing was resorted to in self-defence. They alleged that there was firing from the protestors from a 12 bore rifle that had injured around 35 police constables. Officially, however, the SIT found no record of it.
Four day’s police remand for Umranangal
IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal, who was arrested on Monday, was remanded to police custody on Tuesday for four days. In the court of judicial magistrate Ekta Uppal, the SIT had, however, sought ten days’ police remand for Umranagal’s custodial interrogation.
