Besides stubble burning, pollution by brick kilns a big worry for PPCB
Ludhiana – It seems that Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has already given up to tackle the menace of stubble burning. Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on Saturday held a seminar on stubble burning and innovative technologies for pollution control at Sahnewal. However, instead of highlighting the methods to curb stubble burning, PPCB chairman and his officers delved on reducing pollution of brick kilns and in grain markets.PPCB Chairman Kahan Singh Pannu stated that the department is introducing new technologies to tackle the problem of pollutants by brick kilns and grain markets So that a clamp could be put on the rising pollution level. Various issues such as municipal solid waste burning, introduction of new technologies in brick kilns, concerns on high AQI of Punjab, noise pollution by pressure horns etc were discussed. The major highlight of the discussion was the high dust pollution in the grain markets where the level of RSPM is very severe. A major chunk of dust pollution is caused by mechanised machines used for paddy separation as they are operated in open and no control measure is provided. Executive Environmental Engineer of PPCB Gurbakhshish Singh said that different point of views were kept by the participants and demonstrations were given which can be used to control pollution in grain markets.Singh also said that apart from the industrial pollution and stubble burning, these unconventional sources of pollution create a lot of pollution.
