A function organised by Congress proved to be a total failure here on Saturday. The party was to get feedback from partymen and common people for preparing the party’s manifesto for forthcoming assembly elections next year. The party leaders present on the occasion included the party’s election campaign committee chairperson and former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. The programme was to run for seven hours. However, in view of almost negligible presence of common people, she was compelled to leave the programme after around 30 minutes. The programme was held at the Asia’s biggest grain market in Khanna.
However, the party’s campaign committee convener and former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal remained present throughout the programme. Interestingly, Member Rajya Sabha Shamsher Singh Dullo and many other staunch Congressmen were absent at the programme. This was in all likelihood due to the ongoing factionalism among the partymen.
Replying to a question asked by the media, Bhattal denied that there was any prevalence of factionalism in the party. She said, “There is no groupism in the party,” adding, everyone had been given their responsibilities. She added that Dullo might be busy somewhere else in the party programme.
To another question, she said that she was leaving the programme much earlier because she was to attend someone’s cremation. “There is no other reason,” she said categorically. She said that they would send feedback to the party high command and recommend to include the area problems and issues in the party’s election manifesto.
She said that she was not aware of the survey of the area conducted by Prashant Kishor’s team, which has observed the party weak in Khanna and suggested of bringing in a fresh party candidate there. However, she categorically said that the party leadership would think over the team’s analysis and survey report. She said whatever might be the decision, it would be taken in the larger interests of the party.
