Even after gaining an outright majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and becoming a leading political party in the country, the BJP’s depravity in Punjab stands rather too stark.
Even as the notification for the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab is at hands, the BJP continues to look askance for its candidates at the three seats- Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur. It is a far too glaring travesty of fact that the party has no three straight faces to put up at these constituencies and it has been for quite some time demonstrating confusingly poor signs of dithering.Though the BJP has worked out an age-old understanding with the Shiromani Akali Dal for these three seats leaving the other ten to the SAD, yet every time as the Lok Sabha elections are around the corner, the party is torn in a dilemma.
In Amritsar, after Navjot Sidhu quit the BJP, the party has been struggling no end to find his replacement. It is so baffling that the party could not nurture a local leader to stand up for the occasion for so many years. Last time, in early 2000 the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to paratroop Navjot Sidhu to salvage the seat out of the clutches of veteran Congress leader Raghunandan Lal Bhatia who had been an MP from the seat for six times. Sidhu broke the jinx and opened floodgates for the BJP. But the BJP apparently did not grow beyond that.In Gurdaspur, similarly, Vajpayee planted cinestar Vinod Khanna who not only uprooted formidable Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder but also became a force to reckon with.
After Vinod Khanna, the BJP is completely lost in the constituency now.In the last almost two decades the party has not been able to have a local leader to qualify himself for the Lok Sabha ticket. In Hoshiarpur again, in spite of the sitting BJP MP Vijay Sampla, who happens to be the Union minister, the party is gasping for breath apparently because Sampla seems to have lost on popularity during the last five years.Should the BJP rejig Lok Sabha seats with the SAD to avert such dilemma hit it every time the Lok Sabha elections are knocking at the door ?
