Blaming ruling Congress government of poor preparedness, the district BJP leaders have written to the State Election Commissioner (SEC) for rescheduling the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) Elections. The MC polls are scheduled for December 17. The BJP leaders said that they have received the voter lists of only 42 wards out of total 80, hence the decision to reschedule the civic body polls. They demanded that the voters lists of all the wards should be made ready and only then the civic body polls beheld. Interestingly, the district election authorities had been claiming that the voter lists of all the wards were published. In the letter, District President Ramesh Sharma and General Secretary Raman Pubby said that they have received the voter lists of ward number 1, 7, 17, 19, 22, 24 to 40, 57 to 59, 61, 62, 64 to 75, 77,78,80. “We are still waiting for the voter lists of the total 80 wards,” they mentioned. “Due to the non-availability of voter lists, the aspirant candidates have not been able to file their nomination papers. The candidates have been deprived of filing nomination papers,” they maintained. It is pertinent to mention here that the local residents were irked over the bulk transfer of their votes in other wards after delimitation. The voters were left harassed, after which rectification was done by the District Electoral Office officials. Recently, the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) had received over 400 objections on votes, which were addressed hurriedly. During the past week, the EROs conducted verification of voter lists after which it was expected that the final lists would be published by Wednesday evening. The Punjab State Election Commission has issued the schedule of MC Elections Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala in which the nomination papers were to be filed from December 2 to 6. The MC poll results would be announced on same date of polling ie December 17. BJP District President Ramesh Sharma said that the party leaders conducted the interviews of the candidates in Jalandhar on Sunday. “The interviewing committee shortlisted the candidates, whose names would be sent to BJP Punjab president by Sunday night. It is expected that the final list of candidates would be announced on Monday,” he said.
