In the Jind Assembly by-election the BJP has reasserted its new-found political dominance in Haryana with a vengeance. The party has not only made history by capturing the seat in the Jat heartland from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) but has also dispelled the age-old perception that only a Jat would hold the fort in that pocket.Coming close on the heels of the BJP’s overwhelming victory in the mayoral elections in the state about a month back, the outcome of the Jind by-election has helped the party reaffirm its credentials in a state where, till the recent past, it was never a force to reckon with.
The party’s astounding victory in the last Assembly elections in 2014 had made everybody believe that it might just be a flash in the pan. The Manohar Lal Khattar government’s rather quiet and consistent performance subsequently also lent credence to this belief of sceptics. But the mayoral elections made us all sit and take a second look at our not-very-optimistic opinion of the BJP government. And, now the Jind by-election result has reaffirmed the BJP’s ascendance in the state. At the same time, it has blown the entire Opposition into smithereens.
That INLD candidate Umed Redhu had to forfeit his security and Congress candidate Randeep Surjewala barely saved himself from this ignominy after the election is a telling statement coming out from Jind. It simply means that the Chautala-led INLD is a depleted house after the Abhay-Ajay split within the Chautala family and that the Congress is a scattered house where the best Jat bet in Randeep Surjewala also floundered miserably. Some cheer for the Ajay Chautala-led splinter group, Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) which fared far better than the INLD.
