Chandigarh: Despite demonetisation, bookies across the state have reportedly placed over Rs 500 crore in the ‘satta bazaar’ on the outcome of Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, betting on ‘who will form the government and who is going to win or lose this time?’
Thought a majority of the bookies predict that Congress has an edge over its direct opponent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its political partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are on the third place.
The bet is mainly on AAP and Congress. Sources in the satta bazaar, disclosed that of the 117 seats, Congress is likely to bag 52-55 seats, while the AAP is taking 40-45 seats. The SAD-BJP alliance is getting 20-25 seats in this election. The predictions, however, are favouring a hung house.
Out of 117 seats, a political party requires 59 seats to form government which all the parties, as per the bookies, are lacking. To form the government the party, that comes out to be the largest one, would have to go in for an alliance with another.
Satta Bazzar was hot over Jalalabad seat from where SAD president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is facing AAP leader comedian-turned politician Bhagwant Mann in a neck-and-neck contest. The books predict that Sukhbir will lose to Mann in Jalalabad.
According to the prediction of the bookies, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is winning from Lambi but with a thin margin this time. Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh will lose to Badal in Lambi, but will retain his Patiala (Urban) seat. Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is also brother-in-law of Sukhbir Singh Badal, will win Majitha seat with a thin margin.
AAP is getting maximum 20-25 seats in Malwa belt while the Doaba and Majha belts will be with the Congress, as per their predictions.
‘Cong may seek AAP help’
Contrary to the predictions of bookies, the astrologers predict that Congress is going to form the next government under Capt Amarinder Singh’s leadership after winning the 2017 Punjab assembly elections with a full majority (over 60 out of 117 seats).
Hoshiarpur-based Bhrigu Shastris predict a hung assembly. The Congress will emerge as the single largest party followed by AAP. There are chances that Congress can form government with AAP’s support, they predict.
