Captain meets Sonia, stamp on Jakhar’s name likely. Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday held a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the party’s nominee for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat by-elections, scheduled for October 11.Though the official word about the conversation has not been released, sources informed that the two didn’t disagree about the bright prospects of fielding Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Sunil Kumar Jakhar from the constituency. However, the AICC chief didn’t seem to be in hurry as the names of other probable candidates, including former Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa and his ex-MLA wife Charanjit Kaur Bajwa, were also discussed, sources informed. Notably, the list of four names with all pros and cons were also discussed in a meeting held between Congress affairs in-charge for Punjab Asha Kumari, Amarinder Singh on Sunday at Amarinder’s Delhi residence, where Sunil Jakhar was also present. If one goes by the reports, Sunil Jakhar is the front runner but the claim of Bajwa family is also tough to be rejected for them being local and Jakhar an outsider. The 63-year-old Jakhar enjoys good rapport with the people in the helm of affairs. Having Amarinder’s backing, Jakhar is also accepted by Asha Kumari. However, having tasted two defeats in a row, as he lost Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat in 2014 with a gap of over 31,000 votes before losing his three-time won Abohar Vidhan Sabha seat early this year, Jakhar himself is learnt to be not much enthusiastic about throwing the hat in the Lok Sabha polls for once again and that too when he knows that a section of partymen have already launched “outsider” campaign against him.On the other side, Amarinder Singh is reportedly putting weight behind him with a reason that a majority of party legislators in Majha region wants him to contest the by-polls. He has also told Sonia Gandhi that Gurdaspur belt is dominated by Hindu voters and Jakhar belongs to them. Sources informed that the factionalism in the segment had also been discussed, to which Amarinder again projected Jakhar as best choice for being capable to take all along. Understanding the fact that it was a prestigious test for the Congress as the party has formed the government in Punjab after a gap of 10 years, the AICC chief will soon meet Asha Kumari to listen to her also.Gurdaspur by-polls have been necessitated due to the demise of BJP MP Vinod Khanna. Notably, the actor-politician Khanna had his dominance in Gurdaspur as he won the seat for BJP in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014, leaving just 2009 elections to go with Partap Singh Bajwa. Now the BJP is yet to decide the candidate, with the primary choice between Vinod Khanna’s widow Kavita Sharma and businessman Swaran Salaria. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded the 64-year-old Major General Suresh Khajuria as party candidate for the battle, which is set to become triangular due to the prevalent circumstance.
