Kapurthala:Over dozen CCTV cameras installed at different spots to capture the movement of anti-social elements are lying dysfunctional from past six months.
Citizens of the city gathered under the banner of Jago after a class VIII student Jaskirat alias Jasssi was kidnapped and brutually murndered by his own cousin April last year.
“The residents contributed lakhs of rupees to install 34 CCTV cameras across the city,” said Subhash Makrandi, President of Jago.
Markandi further said that nearly Rs 18 lakh was spent and even a monitoring centre was established at police line. However, the CCTV cameras installed near Sacred Heart School chowk, Near Jammu Palace, Shalimar Bagh , Kanjali road etc are not working.
Makrandi along with his team members met former SSP Alka Meena in January and the latter directed Amrik Singh Chahal a police official to look into the matter but in no vain.
Jago Team PRO Kuldeep Sharma added that a few months ago cameras installed at Charbatti chowk were uprooted by a truck and even providing clues to police the cops failed to act. Amish Kundra who installed the cameras, has accused police of not clearing his installation bill of Rs 55 thousand. SSP, Kapurthala Sandeep Sharma said that he has taken this project in his own hands and declared that all the CCTV cameras will be prepared if required and will be put into service within 3 days.
