Jalandhar: Union Education Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday hinted at Modi government’s major concern and said that it was a challenge to improve the government education sector and the Union government was striving to correct it.
“It is really a challenge to improve government education sector, we will strive to correct it,” the Union Education Minister said while addressing students and faculty at LPU, Phagwara.
Javadekar said that whether government or private, only good institutions would flourish and bad would go. “More an institution would be good, more autonomy it would have. Survive through competition and that is only the 21st Century India”, he stated in his speech.
Notably, the past some time witnessed clash of interests among student wings of the BJP and those inspired by the left ideology at the leading government universities like Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University(DU), IITs and central universities in the country.
Further, as per the recent orders, University Grants Commission (UGC) has cut funding for social discrimination research centres across the country. The UGC has sent circulars to some universities that house such centres stating that their plan funding end on March 31.
Addressing the gathering, Javadekar said, “Our government is also working on public-private partnerships, where competition and collaboration between the two will certainly bring out the best of India. Both public-private sectors can co-exist and make India prosper. We want good education to all.”Explaining about the new education policy, the Education Minister said, “The new education policy rests on five pillars _ accessibility, quality, equity, accountability and affordability. We are striving to make all education systems, prevalent in the country, clean and transparent.”
Javadekar also emphasised on innovation and research and invoked teachers and students to bring out new ideas. “We are fastest growing country in the world. To keep up pace, innovate that is not existing. Research and develop and have as many patents as you can for the betterment of the society. We have great merit-based scholarships for our students to retain best of brains in the country by following ‘brain gain and no brain drain,” he added. Earlier, Javadekar awarded illustrious members of staff and students with Rs 20 lakh and rolls of honour. For this, 6 LPU researchers, 20 students for their 10 pointer CGPA in their respective programmes, one international shooter, 20 national sports persons and 40 students for excellence in different fields of cultural activities were honoured.
