Chandigarh: Prediction of light and moderate showers in next couple of days in the region has brought cheers on the faces of Punjab farmers. The agriculture experts termed the weather conditions healthy for temperature-sensitive wheat crop and predict a good yield this year due to extended cold weather.
According the meteorological department, the sky will remain cloudy for next a week and the region will experience a widespread rain.
For the last three days, drizzle has been witnesses in different parts of Punjab which have brought down the day temperature.
The state has sown wheat crop on nearly 35 lakh hectares and the yield is expected almost over 160 lakh metric tones, this year, claimed AP Singh, an agriculture officer.
Sulakhan Singh, a Hoshiarpur based farmer, claimed that Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Nawanshar and other parts of this parts of the region are showing excellent crop. The winter season has prolonged a little bit which is favourable for the wheat crop, claimed Jagjit Singh, of Ropar.
The expected showers will be help full in controlling the Yellow Rust, spotted in small chucks in parts of Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ropar and Nawanshar districts, claimed a Gurdev Singh of Garhshankar.
