Chandigarh: Congress and AAP have entered into one-upmanship in promising each and everything under the sky to solicit support but Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is not inclined to enter this mad race. The party will be extra-cautious and make only those promises that are feasibly within constraint of resources.
In-charge of manifesto committee SAD and former union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that parties having remotest prospects of coming to power can make afford wild poll promises as these won’t be required to fulfill the promised dreams.
On the contrary, Dhindsa argued, the parties have to tread cautiously and to make well calibrated promises as the party will have to implement these or face music. Those miles away from the seat of power can befool people as they won’t face any post- poll predicaments. Nonewould question them after their humiliating defeat, added Dhindsa..
Dhindsa said that both Congress and AAP at present are sailing in the same boat and are adopting unwarranted irresponsible wish- list for electorate like unconditional loan waiver of farmers. Though Congress is already decimated yet it is in power in Kerala, Karnataka, Uttrakand and Himachal Pradesh where the farmers too are in acute fiscal stress. Dhindsa argued that before promising loan waiver, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh should ask the chief ministers of these states why they have failed to waive farmers’ loan so far in their respective states. The AAP supremo Kejriwal, who is also chief minister of Delhi, should first announce farm loan waiver in Delhi having thin presence of farmers before venturing to make such demand for predominantly agrarian state Punjab, he added.
Dhindsa said that both Kejriwal and Amarinder Singh owe an explanation to people how they would generate resources for loan waiver. “When we promised free power to farm sector or promised ‘Shagun’ or ‘Atta Dal’ schemes, we were aware of their fiscal implications. We implemented these soon after coming to power” said Dhindsa adding that the SAD has excellent track record of honouring promises while Congress and APP are on the other side of pendulum.
