Chandigarh: After facing strong objections, the Congress released its fourth list of 10 candidates for the Punjab assembly elections, here on Friday. The party withdrew two nominees, announced names of eight more candidates besides putting nine others on hold.
Renowned Punjabi singer Satwinder Kaur Bitti has been fielded from Sahnewal, while Jalandhar (West) assembly seat ticket went to Sushil Kumar Rinku, a sitting councillor in Jalandhar Municipal Corporation.
Dropping former candidate Vinay Mahajan, and denying ticket to Naresh Puri, son of former Congress leader and Cabinet minister late Raghu Nath Sahai Puri from Sujanpur, Congress has fielded Amit Singh Manto. The party has picked a former Mayor of Amritsar Sunil Dutti from Amritsar North.
The Party also picked two youth, Amit Singh Manto and Barinder Singh Dhillon, for the ensuing Vidhan Sabha elections. Manto, belonging to Rajput community, will give a tought fight to BJP candidate and sitting MLA Dinesh Singh Babbu at Sujanpur seat. Dhillon, who had been associated with NSUI, is Congress choice against Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, a SAD candidate from Ropar. Other candidates selected to battle the polls are Hardev Singh Laddi (Shahkot), Luv Kumar Goldy Garshankar, and Geja Ram (Jagraon-SC).
Ex-Congress MLA Rajkumar Gupta has replaced Tejinder Bittu in Jalandhar (North), while from Bhadaur (SC) constituency, Nirmal Singh Nimma has been replaced with Joginder Singh Panjgrain, who had contested 2012 assembly polls on Congress ticket from Jaitu (SC). With this, the party has announced a total of 108 candidates for election to the 117-member state assembly. The remaining nine tickets would also be announced at the earliest, said Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh, reiterating the party’s commitment to choosing winnable candidates over other considerations and sticking to the one-family-one-ticket rule.
