Congress to launch full throttle campaign for MC elections
Ludhiana – Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is all set to witness polls in January and almost all political parties are busy in preparing strategy for their candidates and register a win. The Congress party, which is still in a euphoric state after a thumping victory in Punjab, is leaving no stone unturned to score a win in the polls. Party insiders said that while the Bains brothers factor will play a major role in the polls, the timing of the polls in January in Ludhiana cannot be ignored. While the civic body polls in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala will be held in December, a full throttle campaign by top leaders of the party is being planned for the biggest Municipal Corporation of Punjab, Ludhiana, that will witness polls a month later. Sources in Congress said that Punjab Congress and Member Parliament from Gurdaspur Sunil Jakhar and MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu will play a major role in the campaigning for Ludhiana polls. A majority of Member Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Ludhiana city belong to Congress. While Rakesh Pandey had won from North constituency, Surinder Dawar had scored a victory from Central. Ludhiana West was conquered by Bharat Bhushan Ashu and the East constituency by first time MLA Sanjay Talwar. However Simarjit Singh Bains and his brother Balwinder Bains had won from Atam Nagar and Ludhiana South constituency respectively which are considered their den. After delimitation of wards from 75 to 95 it is expected that both the constituencies will have more than 25 wards that could play a major role in the polls if some independents also join hands with Bains brothers. District Congress chief, Gurpreet Gogi said that his party is prepared to take on opponents like it did during the assembly polls held in March. “We are sure that Congress will decimate the opponents in MC polls due to the vision of our leaders. Mayor for the MC will be from Congress” said Gogi. On the other hand opposition BJP has claimed that no developmental works were taking place after Congress took the reins of the state. “During the time of SAD-BJP rule in the state, several developmental projects were passed and executed” said senior BJP leader Parveen Bansal. MLA from Ludhiana West Bharat Bhushan Ashu said that the notification forward delimitation will be issued next week after which government will decide the date for elections. Ward numbers 1, 3 and 5 along with all odd number wards till 95 will be reserved for women. Out of 95, 14 wards will be reserved for Schedule caste (SC) and two wards for Backward class (BC).
