Jalandhar: The district Congress leaders along with Leader of Opposition in Municipal Corporation (MC) Jalandhar on Friday staged a massive dharna against the Vigilance department for not initiating the probe against the guilty MC officials.
Led by district Congress urban leader Rajinder Beri, former cabinet minister Avtar Henry’s son Bawa Henry, councilor Des Raj Jassal and Jagdish Raja, the leader of the opposition, the congress councilors raised voice against the construction of a road in Maqsudan area in the city. The protest went on for more than two hours, blocking the vehicular traffic, which kept the police and the district administration staff on their toes. Initially, the Congress leaders and councilors tried to barge inside the district administrative complex but they were stopped by the police. Later, the Congress leaders tried to scale the walls of the district administrative complex after which the police used mild force to disperse them.
After the continuous protest, a team of officials including ADC Gurmeet Singh, ADCP Jasvir Singh, ADCP H S Mander, ADCP Traffic RPS Sandhu reached the spot to pacify the congress leaders. The officials informed that the matter was brought to the notice of DGP Suresh Arora, who has asked the Congress leaders to meet him in person.
Rajinder Beri claimed that the SSP Vigilance was delaying the probe in the case, which showed that the officials were hand in gloves with the corrupt officials of the MC. However, ADC Gurmeet informed Beri that the local bodies secretary was investigating the matter.
Later, Beri said that the Congress demands a time-bound inquiry into the case. “We would meet the DGP on Monday and demand a time-bound inquiry”, he added. It is pertinent to mention here that the MC has given a tender of four laning of road near Maqsudan chowk.
However, when the road was not constructed for long, councilor Des Raj Jassal questioned about the delay but was informed that the forest department did not give clearance to construct the road from Maqsudan chowk to Bidhipur and a fresh road stretch should be considered.
