Congress MLAs advised to wait for seat in govt
Chandigarh – Although the Congress High Command has summoned the dossiers of all its MLAS in Punjab to honour some of them with seats of ministers and other posts, but it seems that except nine MLAs, who have to be inducted in the Cabinet, the rest will have to wait a little bit more as the party has changed its mind after witnessing litigation initiated by Election Commission against the office of profit. Still, office-bearers and senior workers of the party are likely to be inducted as chairmen, co-chairmen, directors etc in various corporations, boards and trusts in the state. There has been an unsaid race going on amongst Congress MLAS to land a seat in the government since its formation last year. Senior MLAs have been seeking Cabinet post in the council of ministers, while the rest have been eyeing Chief Parliamentary Secretaries, chairman and other profitable posts. However, after the disqualification of 21 AAP MLAs, who had been made Parliamentary Secretaries in the Delhi-based Kejriwal government, it appears now that the Congress has changed its mind. Earlier, in July last year, Punjab and Haryana High Court had quashed the appointment of four BJP MLAs as Chief Parliamentary Secretaries (CPS) in Haryana as well as in August 2016, the court had also set aside the appointment of 18 MLAS as CPS in the previous SAD-BJP government in Punjab. Moreover, another writ petition, which had been filed against 11 MLAs of Kejriwal government, who have been made co-chairperson of District Disaster Management Authority, is being investigated by the Election Commission of India on the recommendation of President, who has sought a report in this regard. Therefore, it seems difficult to adjust the jumbo size majority of Congress MLAs in Punjab. In Captain Amarinder Singh’s previous government, from 2002—07, a number of MLAS had been adjusted as CPS’, chairmen in various boards and corporations and that too after the break-out of revolt against the CM.This time, the scene is not too different as compared to earlier. Sources in the party said that the CM has been asked to wait till a further solution is located or till the end of litigation, which will take time. This time, senior workers and office-bearers of the party are likely to be accommodated in state level boards and corporations, improvement trusts and market committees in the state.
