Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday issued contempt notice to Additional Chief Secretary Jagpal Singh Sandhu for August 19 for failure to appoint chairperson and members of the Punjab Human Rights Commission. It has asked the Punjab government to submit the reply in this regard.
During a previous hearing the Punjab government had undertook to appoint chairperson and two members of the PSHRC within six weeks from June 21. Petitioner advocate H C Arora had sought the issuance of appropriate order for directing the state government to take steps for appointment of chairperson and two members of the PSHRC. He had stated in the petition that chairperson of the PSHRC completed his tenure on March 22. A member completed his tenure on January 11 while the second member completed his tenure on March 3.
The PSHRC has been non-functional since March 22.
Seeing that neither the chairperson nor the members of the PSHRC have been appointed even after ending of six months’ time, advocate Arora filed a contempt petition.
