Crime against school children is witnessing spurt continuously leaving parents in a state of worry and disappointment as out of every three children, two of them are the victim of sexual harassment. Rise in the number of cases is due to awareness, as children have now started confiding in their parents regarding such incidents. Increasing incidents of crime against school children are matter of serious concern for parents.As per the National Crime Bureau, nearly 70 per cent of children go through such incidents.
Mostly the children between from 5 to 12 years of age group are the victim of such incidents. It has been observed that in most of the cases the accused was a family member or an acquaintance.Sources said that the accused in majority of the cases are those with whom the victims had attachment and are from the same family. They also observe that most of the school children are still not aware about sexual harassment and not able to differentiate between a good touch and a bad touch.It is learnt that about 2.5 per cent victims have been succeeded in getting justice which is very low as compared to registered cases.
Besides, the teachers have also been found involved in crime against children in schools which raises questions on the safety of children in schools. In view of this, a strong need is being felt to take action against such teachers.A survey conducted by the Central Women and Child Development body revealed that about 53 per cent of the children fall prey in the hands of culprits and criminals in their life.Along with this, the State Women Commission also accepts the facts that spurt in crime against children and women have been witnessed continuously across the state.
In view of this, the commission recommended the revision of guidelines to ensure the safety of women and children at public places. The survey conducted by the State Women Commission also showed that three- fold increase has been witnessed in last five years. It also includes heinous crime such as sexual harassment, misbehave and physical harassment. Even children feel hesitate to inform the parents pertaining to the same. The survey also revealed that it use to affect the whole family of victim child.
