Chandigarh:After completing her M Sc (Honours) in Biotechnology from Panjab University, Chandigarh, Daaman Thind Bajwa, a Congress candidate, is toiling hard in the filthy lanes of Sunam to establish herself in Punjab politics. Daughter of an ex-serviceman, Daaman is one of the young faces pitched by the Congress in Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections 2017.
Having no political background, Daaman indulged in student’s politics as a leader of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress. She was elected as a president of Punjab unit of the NSUI, and subsequently vice president of the Youth Congress in 2015. She is still holding the post. As NSUI president, Daaman launched a campaign “Sada Haq” in Punjab seeking support of free education up to graduation level for children of poor families.
Daaman is also a member of ‘Rahul Brigade’ in Punjab and a choice of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Captain Amarinder Singh as a party candidate from Sunam from where the party candidates had lost the elections for the last couple of times.
Capt Amarinder was impressed with her work when Daaman moderated his interactions with the college and university students last year.
Daaman will face Aman Arora of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and sitting MLA Gobind Singh Longowal of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the Vidhan Sabha election on Saturday at Sunam seat. Apart from political rivals, she will also counter a party rebel in Rajinder Singh Deepa, the brother-in-law of Aman Arora.
