Nawanshahr: Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujwal on Saturday visited Nawanshahr and Banga grain markets to take stock of the ongoing wheat procurement process in the district. An official release later said that the DC informed that out of a total of 24924 MT of wheat that had arrived in the district mandis, 20438 had been purchased so far. It included 4726 MT wheat purchased in the Nawanshahr Mandi and 2204 MT in the Banga grain market. The release added that the District Food and Supplies Controller Amarjit Singh was asked by the DC to speed up the lifting of the procured wheat from the mandis so that the farmers did not face any problems.
The DC also took stock of other arrangements in the grain markets including setting up of notice boards of dispute settlement committees and drinking water arrangements etc. As per the release, the DC urged the farmers ‘not to be worried about anything as the district administration and the government were’there to take care of all their procurement issues. Perhaps he was hinting at the payment of the procured produce that might be weighing on the minds of the farmers following the media reports in which the RBI has refused to release funds for the procured wheat to the state government. SDM Banga Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu, District Mandi Officer Swaran Singh, Nawanshahr Arhtiya’s Association president Manjinder Singh Walia, secretaries of market committees and officials of procurement agencies were also present.
