Chandigarh: A debt ridden farmer of Golewala village in Faridkot allegedly committed suicide by jumping into Rajasthan Feeder Canal on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Jugraj Singh (45), owing a debt of Rs 30 lakh, took the extreme step.
Iqbal Singh, a brother of the deceased, informed that Jugraj Singh had been to Faridkot for completing the formalities regarding sale of his two acres of land. Jugraj Singh had sold the land to payback the debt that he had taken to solemnize the marriage of his son on March 18, he said.
Receiving information, a police party reached the spot and swing into rescue operation. The police also pressed divers to locate and fish out the body.
Dr Nanak Singh, SSP, Faridkot, said the case is being investigated.
