Patiala: Alarming bells started ringing for diarrhoea-hit Samana on Tuesday as 10 water samples taken from the city, mostly from the affected localities, failed during the lab tests conducted at a Chandigarh-based laboratory.
On the other hand, the situation turned grim with two more deaths being reported, taking the death count to nine even as the health department was not backing the toll as these did not take place in government-run civil hospital. The total number of patients with diarrhoea symptoms have also crossed the 300 mark. According to reports, Dwarka Dass of Tej Colony area and Krishna Devi of Gharamma Patti area of the city died on Tuesday, taking the toll to nine. Civil Surgeon Rajeev Bhalla said that after receiving the report its copies were immediately sent to DC and the SDM,Samana, for future course of action.
When this correspondent tried to contact the DC on his cellphone he did not pick it up. When Bhalla was asked about the deaths, he quipped that so far nobody had come to the civil hospital to report any case of death, so he was not in a position to say anything about the toll. He said that out of panic people were trying to link each death in the city to the disease. He added that the SMO had told him that now only four patients were left in the hospital.
