Amritsar:The district administration on Tuesday honoured two international hockey players of the holy city, who were a part of the India’s hockey team in the just concluded Special Winter Olympics, held at Vienna in Austria. The Indian hockey team, bagged gold medal in the event as it outwitted Lithunia’s players in the final match.
The two players, Akashdeep Singh and Harmanpreet Singh, however, were picked up by the authorities to become a part of the Indian hockey team for participation in the Winter Olympics. It has for the first time that the guys from Amritsar secured a berth in the India’s national hockey team selected for participation in the Winter Olympics.
As the two players on Tuesday arrived in the holy city, they were given a warm welcome by the district administration. Later, the deputy commissioner of Amritsar, Kamaldeep Singh Sangha, honoured the two hockey icons with mementoes and also garlanded them in his office.
Narrating the itinerary of the event, the players, however, disclosed that in the quarter final match of the event, they trounced Hong Kong team by a margin of 4-2. In the semi-finals of the fete, they were engaged in a neck and neck fight with guys of Sweden, However, they outwitted them even by 3-2 to enter finals of the tourney.
In the final, they had to lock horns with the hockey team of Lithunia, However, the destiny favoured them this time too and they emerged winner in the final competition to wrest gold medal in the hockey of the Winter Olympics.
