Nawanshahr- School teachers working in the district on contract basis under various societies like PICTES, SSA, RMSA, Model schools, Adarsh schools, RERT and MDM etc here on Sunday. They held a protest and burnt the effigy of the Punjab government for its move to regularise their services on a basic pay of Rs 10,300 for a probationary period of three years despite the fact they have already completed more than ten years of services on salaries ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 per month. Teachers’ leaders including Harjinder Singh, Kuldeep Kumar, Harpreet Singh, Narinder Kaur and Sarbdeep Singh said the government move could push many teachers to take the extreme step of committing suicide as they would be hard pressed to make both ends meet with just 10,300 pay month.“How can we repay our bank loans procured on the basis of salary statements showing salaries ranging between Rs 30,000-50,000.” asked the bewildered teachers. Interestingly, the state government also now wants to regularise the services of computer teachers who were regularised seven years ago under Punjab Civil Services Rules, lamented the protesters who accused the Captain government of going back on its poll promises.Meanwhile, government regular school teachers in Punjab have decided to intensify their stir under the aegis of Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha under which, apart from holding district-level protests on March 14, a state level rally at Ludhiana will be held on March 25 to push for the acceptance of their demands. State convenor Sukhwinder Chahal here on Sunday said that the Morcha strongly condemns the state government move to regularise the services of contractual teachers on a meagre basic pay.
