Kusum Arora, Jalandhar : Finally annual MC budget meeting. Six months after a stormy session, the SAD-BJP led Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) is finally all set to hold Rs 537 crore annual MC budget meeting on September 6. The budget meet has come at a time, when the civic body’s five year tenure is coming to an end on September 25. It was expected that the last meeting of the SAD-BJP ruled civic house would turn out to be yet another stormy affair, as the main opposition in MC was in power in the state. While the MC’s budget meeting could not be held all these months, local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has passed Rs 333 crore expenditure of the civic body. Though mayor tried to hold budget meeting but congress councilors remained adamant to come up clean on corruption charges. The previous budget meeting held on March 31 witnessed a heated and chaotic scene, as the newly formed congress government MLAs from the five constituencies namely –Pargat Singh from Jalandhar Cantonment, Sushil Rinku from Jalandhar West, Bawa Henry from Jalandhar North, Surinder Chaudhary from Kartarpur and Rajinder Beri from Jalandhar Central cornered Mayor Sunil Jyoti on charges of poor development and corruption. Among the major initiatives planned were using Beas river’s water from Miyani village for urban consumption under City Development Initiative in Asia project, Rs 800 crore storm sewerage project to address the problem of low lying areas, which get inundated in rains, Rs 59 crore 50 MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Basti Peerdad, 20 firemen to be recruited in the Fire Department and constructing public toilets on the busy stretches of Jalandhar-Pathankot bypass, PAP chowk and Hoshiarpur bypass.Notably, BJP’s mayor Sunil Jyoti not only faced stiff opposition from the main opposition congress, he was cornered by none other than his own party councilors. Jyoti also remained at loggerheads with SAD councilor and Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia over serious allegations of corruption and under the table payments. Bhatia was vocal on the issue of corruption, which he claimed affected the image of SAD on account of development. The duo’s fight over supremacy in the civic body led to postponement of many house meetings in the past five years. In the past, Bhatia and Mayor’s fight was solved through the intervention of SAD-BJP top brass. Finally annual MC budget meeting. Now, the MC has decided to impose fine of Teh Bazari wing under which Rs 1000 would be charged on confiscation of LPG cyclinders, Rs 500 on using a canopy and Rs 5 per square metre fine on installing a tent on the road without prior approval. Meanwhile, heading towards a Green initiative, the MC was all set to install Rs 1.09 crore solar system on its terrace, which would save Rs 1 lakh electricity bill expenses. Besides, the MC has also decided to set up Energy Conservation Building code for city, where emphasis would be laid on pollution free buildings. Finally annual MC budget meeting.
